In 2021, my wife and I made the bold decision to sell our Airstream trailer, which we had purchased in 2019, just before the onset of COVID. While we loved the Airstream, we realized it simply didn’t align with our needs. It lacked the versatility and accessibility essential for the camping adventures we love. So, we revisited our original idea: building our own rig. After careful consideration, we decided to go with a Sprinter van.
Selling the Airstream and acquiring a brand new Sprinter, with nothing but the driver and passenger windows and doors intact, was an exciting endeavor. Though I had never tackled a project of this magnitude before, my extensive experience in car modifications, body styling, and paintwork equipped me for the challenge. Coupled with my construction background, I dove headfirst into creating everything from cabinets to beds, floors, walls, ceilings, and all the electrical systems. Every feature you see in the van is a product of my own handiwork, and my wife, who skillfully stitched the curtains and upholstery work.
I’ve included a few examples of the designs and SketchUp work that helped me shape my vision. Although the project is still a work in progress, we recently made significant advancements, including installing an air conditioner and constructing a brand new roof rack using 80/20 material. I find this material to be not only versatile and flexible but also far more cost-effective than purchasing a standard roof rack from various vendors.
